Blue Beetle #6 (2016)

"Jaime Reyes: Reluctant Wielder of the Power of the Blue Beetle Scarab. Ted Kord: Billionaire Industrialist and Sidelined Superhero. Together They Are The Blue Beetle...Whether They Like It Or Not." Last issue Mordecai showed up, went after Jaime's mother, and all hell broke loose! Keith Giffen and Scott Kolins are back for round 2 with issue #6 and a story called "Fury!"

Jaime wants answers! Mordecai attacked his mother, and nearly ripped the scarab out of him, while Ted and Ms. Magnus rounded up the Reyes family. A city block was destroyed...Jaime wants to know what is happening and why? Mrs. Reyes walks in and wants to hear the answers too.

Ted suggests they try to piece everything they each know together to get the bigger picture, starting with what Jaime figured out about the abandoned houses and holes. Jaime tells them about the coffin, or crypt. Ted thinks the homes were chosen because the people that lived in them wouldn't be missed. Mrs. Reyes agrees, no one really knew those families.Ted says the thing in the coffin, taking the people, it's paving the way for something...and Mordecai is the harbinger. Not only that, things are accelerating! And then Ted starts to tell them about Dan Garrett!

Brenda and Paco chat by phone, coming to the same frightening conclusion. Whoever went after Mrs. Reyes knew that she knew her son was Blue Beetle. Which means they could be next!

We pick back up with Doc Reyes screaming at Ted! He knew (something) about the scarab. He knew the scarab was (maybe) responsible for Garrett's death...and Ted is offering to try to remove the scarab, why? So he can use it himself? Ted says "if" it can be removed and explains that it is causing Jaime to mutate. Dr. Fate appears outside, watching, listening, as the argument gets more heated until Jaime transforms into Blue Beetle and takes off!

Jaime makes his way to the Sheldon house, thinking about how Mordecai could have killed his mother, in search of answers.

Deep below, Mordecai kneels before the thing in the sarcophagus, vowing not to fail again. Jaime charges in fueled by rage, and...Mordecai disappears, only to reappear behind him. Then the villain pulls Jaime's soul from his body, leaving the body of Blue Beetle to crumple to the floor.

As the villain gloats about his victory, he learns to late the while Jaime may be out, the scarab is not. In fact, the scarab powers up into an armored hulking monster. It appears the thing in the crypt wanted this, even if means Mordecai must be sacrificed. Without Jaime, the scarab is unrestrained.

The two armored monsters battle, until it looks as if Mordecai will be killed...and then Dr. Fate shows up!

Argh! I want to hear more about Dan, but it just keeps getting teased! It's interesting though...in the brief glimpses of Dan we've seen, he appears to be wearing a chainmail tunic, similar to the one worn by the Golden Age Dan Garret. And in this issue not only is he wearing that, but his eyes are glowing while he holds the scarab. Curiouser and curiouser! This issue may not have packed as much action, or emotion, as last month, but it's great nonetheless. This series continues to pose more questions than answers...and I love it! It keeps me coming back month after month.

  1. Do we think Ted will become a super hero again with this series?

  2. I'm sure we'll see him back in action to some degree. What I'm not as sure of, but certainly hoping for, is seeing him back in his classic costume!
